Going through major football withdrawal

Seriously, when is someone going to get it together and have a watchable spring football league again? I can’t seem to make myself get into hockey, and I live in Colorado where we don’t have a Major League Baseball team (you heard me).

I’m even desperate enough to watch a terrible game like Jets-Jaguars or Bucs-Falcons.

My school’s team had their annual spring skirmish last weekend.

We at least partially lost, so it was pretty much the same experience you get in October.

College football hasn’t been good here for a long time, although CSU had a good season last year (and of course their coach fled immediately).

I’m also pretty sure the Colorado Rockies have already somehow been mathematically eliminated from the MLB playoffs. It sucks, I could get into baseball if there was a decent team, though I always preferred playing it to watching it.

I don’t think I can make it 4 months.

Is it wrong that I want Tebow to succeed in Philly? I realize I should probably be annoyed by him (and his fans), but every time I hear the name ‘Tebow’ all that comes to mind is this:

You have to remember, for the fourteen years between Elway hoisting the trophy at Super Bowl XXIII to then, we were constantly getting bounced out of the playoffs courtesy of Peyton Manning. Then we finally get a decent QB (Plummer) and Shanny can’t deal with him going rogue on his playbook, so he gave us Cutler and back-to-back-to-back .500 seasons. Then we get hit with Hurricane Josh and Kyle Orton for God’s sake. Timmy rescued us from the land of blah football and it was awesome, because there was NO LOGICAL REASON HE SHOULD HAVE WON ALL THOSE GAMES. He couldn’t complete a forward pass, FFS. Fuck it. I hope Tebow wins the Super Bowl with the Eagles.

Same here, I do have some interest in the NHL, especially around playoff time. It’s nowhere near as interesting as NFL though.

I’m not allowed to attend their games in person anymore. The last time I was at Coors Field the Rockies managed to lose to the Reds 24-12. I may be drunk right now but that is NOT a typo. It was unreal. I got up in the 7th inning I think to go get a beer, and as I was in line all I heard was the constant sound of a bat hitting balls out of the park. And the Rockies were NOT up to bat. I think I missed something like 4 solo home runs by the Reds waiting in that line.

Spring is for racing, it transitions very well into football in late summer through early winter. There’s only a month or two with no decent racing and no football.

I think part of it for me is that I absolutely HATED playing soccer. I was terrible at it and the scoring is so infrequent. But right around when I was 10 years old was when John Elway was coming into his own. His career paralleled with my growing up. Then it culminated for me when I won a trip to Super Bowl XXXII (airfare, hotel, game tickets, the whole shebang). I got to see the this, the greatest moment of his career, in person, and in our end zone:

We were so close to the field, we almost got hit by his walker! When this play happened, I knew the Broncos would win. I strained my hamstring jumping up and down when the 4th down pass by Favre was broken up.

I guess I played all the sports and soccer was the only sport I wasn’t good at. I played football in Texas schools, and Superbowl 30 coincided with me realizing I didn’t like playing or watching football. I was good enough, I think but it wasn’t fun. It was learning plays, running drills and torture in 115 degree weather for plays that lasted seconds.

Soccer, the more I played the more I realized the talent required to be even half decent. So I watch soccer now with amazement. Baseball I can still remember playing when I watch it, and I miss playing baseball!

I could line drive like a banshee... But everywhere but hitting I did much better: Pitch, catch, right / center/ 1st base and short stop.

It was actually after I quite playing that I hit my first home run during a pick up game. two strike outs and third time at base I forced myself to slow down and just watch the damn ball, then boop, straight out of the park and over the fence behind third base... No one was as surprised as I was. Geez I miss playing. I wonder if I can find a league now.
